EXPRESS CRASHES INTO MOTOR LORRY.
AT RAITAYAY CROSSING
OXE MAX KILLED. ANOTHER SEVERELY INJURED.
Wellington, Last Night. After passing Porirua station on its way this afternoon, the Auckland hound express, which left Wellington lit 12.45 p,m., crashed into a motor lorry on the crossing. The driver of the lorry and a companion received the full effect of the colli.'ion. one being killed and the ot her seriously injured. The injured man was attended hv a doctor from tin' mental ho.-pilal, while I lie body of the oilier was conveyed to the ho'pilal. The engine drawing the train was damaged and unable to proceed, the express being hung up till an engine reached the scene from Baekakaviki. The driver of the lorry, who was killed, was John Edwin Canning, a. married man, 18 years of age, residing at ;1J May Street, Wellington. Jle was a brother of Constable Canning, of Wellington. ‘Those on the train scarcely fell (he impact, hut the engine pulled up with commendable suddenness. It was then found that the lorry had been struck sideways about level with the seals. The machine was badly damaged, the radiator being completely Hat toned. Mr Canning was seriously injured about the head and although he was alive when the train left if was feared that his injuries would prove fatal. The other occupant of the lorry was found underneath the vehicle, with injuries to the legs. The locomotive was slightly damaged aud it was found necessary to put another engine on. The train was delayed at Porirua for just on an hour, but it was expected to make up the time before reaching Auckland.
