FURTHER CONFERENCE RE
SHIPPING
A further conference of delegates from the various chambers of commerce interested in the development of trade of the port of Fox ton was held at Palmerston yesterday, but was not open to the press. Mr H. L. Young presided. The Foxton Chamber of Commerce was represented by Messrs Smith and Hornblow and the Harbour Board by Messrs Linklater and W. Signal. Delegates were also in attendance from Palmerston, Feilding, Levin, and Shannon. Discussion centred around propositions from the C-an-terbury>Shipping Company and Mr A. Hamilton, representing Southern interests. Messrs Young, Linklater, Smith, Kel low and Matheson were appointed to wait upon Mr Hamilton at Wellington, failing his inability to visit Palmerston "North. An offer i<> put on two steamers by i he Canterbury Shipping Co. was discussed and it was pointed out that representatives of the company would inspect the port on Thursday next and confer with the Harbour Board. It was decided that each Chamber be levied to meet any expense in connection with the work ol: the conference. A further meeting will be held to discuss definite proposals from the shipping companies at a later date. Mr Linklater, chairman of the Harbour Board, said in the meantime, all the information required by the shipping companies as to the port and state of the bar would be supplied. The approximate quantities of merchandise and produce which could be handled over the port were submitted by delegates.
