TRIPLE TRAGEDY.
MYSTERY IN TASMANIA. SUPPOSITION OF MURDER. HOBART. Oct. 12. A triple tragedy, surrounded by mystery, occurred' near Swansea. The body of an elderly man, Edward Buncombe, who was living alone in the bush, was found in his hut fatally shot. The hut, where deceased was supposed to have a considerable sum of money, had been rifled. Later the dead body of a second man, Thomas Carpenter, was discovered in the vicinity shot in the back of the head. Trooper Henderson proceeded to the scene in a car. When nearing punrmnlie’s hut he got out, leaving his revolver iti the car, and telling the driver he would not want it. Henderson failing to return, the driver went to the lmt and found the trooper shot dead. The indications pointed to a terrible struggle. The supposition is that the murderer returned to the hut, that Henderson was surprised, and was trying to arrest him when he received the fatal shot. A strong force of armed police and civilians is scouring the district in search of the murderer. The residents are terror-stricken. — Press Association.
