RETURN FOR PAST YEAR

’ln ihe House of Representatives to-day the Hon. G. J. Anderson, in reply to a question by Mr Mitchell, read a return prepared on information obtained from the Government statistician showing the number of new bouses built in New Zealand during the year ending 31st March. 1922, compared with the increase in population. The figures were / as follows: Total increase in population from April 17, 1921, to March 31, 1922, 29,303; total number of houses built in New Zealand, 5,828; number of houses required for the increase in population, estimated at 71 persons to a five-roomed house, which was the standard adopted by the Board of Health in 1919, 4,000: excess of houses over the number required for the increase in population, 1,828. Continuing, the Minister said that from numerous letters he had already received from various of the Dominion, he was firmly convinced that with the lapsing of the rent restriction legislation an impetus would be given to private ventures in the building of houses for the people.
