MANAWATU COUNTY.
The Manawatu County Council met on Tuesday when there were present: Crs. Sir James Wilson (chairman), W. E. Barber, W. S. Penny, J. Boyce, H. H. Hunt, Jas. McKelvie and H. J. Fagan. ENGINEER’S REPORT. ■ In the course of his monthly import on the works in progress and works completed on the roads throughout the cofinty, the engineer (Mr G. Bickford) stated that in the Awahou Riding road maintenance work had been effected on Wirokino, Ivan Ivari and Bowe’s roads, and drains and water tables cleaned out on Foxton-Shannon road. He recently made an inspection of the bridge over the main drain at Wirokino. This bridge had been very troublesome of late. The decking planks were very much worn, and frequently broke with heavy loads, and it was absolutely essential that the bridge should be re-decked with sound timber. Tbe amount of timber required would be approximately 4,200 feet and the total cost of the work including material, would be not less than £IOO. Reporting on the working of the tramway the tramway manager stated that the volume .of traffic for the month was light, and the receipts showed a corresponding drop. A debit balance of £142 2s 10d was shown for the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were: Minerals and manure, 163 tons; merchandise, 97£ tons; cheese and butter, 471 tonsy timber, 15,300 feet; fares amounted to 18s 7d. The quarterly inspections had been made by the waggon inspector, locomotive foreman, inspector of permanent way and bridge inspector. “M” waggons No. 4 and 5 were being overhauled. The chairman reported the receipt of a reasonable offer of sleeper spikes for the completion of a line that was in the course of construction. The council had been paying up to £6B per ton and the spikes were offered at £2l 13s 6d per ton at Wellington, provided the order amounted to four tons. In reply to a question the engineei said that the line now in the course of construction would require about three or four tons, and if tbe council proceeded immediately with the work they could use that amount in 12 months. The order would cost approximately £9O landed at the work. —It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Hunt, seconded by Cr. Barber to procure four tons of tlie spikes. Crs. Fagan, McKelvie, Penny and the chairman were appointed a committee to arrange for a loan of £6,350 in connection with the council’s antecedent liability. The following alterations to the rate roll were agreed to: C. H. Gifkins to Elsie Oppatt, sections 174/S, Sanson: J. W. Brighton to H.M. the King, sections 440/1, Foxton; H. S. Goldsack to H. J.
