THE NEAR EAST CRISIS.
HALT IN NEGOTIATIONS. There is disquieting news respecting the situation in the Near East. It is stated that British official information in regard to the Mundania Conference is the reverse of sanguine, and that many serious difficulties have been encountered. The Turks are reported to be raising many questions quite outside the scope of the conference. There is also a suggestion that fresh Greek intrigues are developing. On the other hand, the Angora Government; in accepting the invitation to a peace conference, has sent a conciliatory reply to the Allies. The Court, of Arbitration at Wellington yesterday morning made its second pronouncement, indicating the adjustment in the wage rate consequent on the further fall in the cost of living. The amount of the reduction decided upon is 3s per week, in the male adult wage, making a total of 8s since April last. A special sitting of the Court will be held next month to hear argument.
