.Mr Massey made a statement in llte House yesterday in reply to a question, that the session would close on the 31st inst.

“In my forty years residence on this coast T do not remember such glorious spring weather as the present,” said Mr Percy Daniel! to our representative litis morning.

The adjourned meeting of the local Rowing Club, to have been held this evening, has been further postponed until a reply has been received from the Harbour Board, re site.

We are informed that arrangements have been made for a visit to Fox ton of Mr “Pussyfoot” Johnston on November 29th. The meeting will be held on the afternoon of the date mentioned as he is booked to speak at Levin the same evening.

Prior to Miss McCormick’s departure from the local State school on Friday afternoon, she was made the recipient of several tokens of esteem from the scholars. The presentations were made by Mr Banks (headmaster), who voiced the school’s regret at the departure of Miss McCormick and wished her every happiness on her transfer to Waipukurau.

Tn dealing with the heavy taxation, Mr Massey, in his speech at Levin on Monday, said many farmers were not able to pay their taxation out of the produce of their land and had to take it out of capital. The sheep in the Dominion had decreased, according to the returns, by four millions, and lie honestly believed it was because many of the farmers had to sell their flock sheep in order to pay their taxation. He was glad to hear that the lambing percentage this year had been good, and that the prospects of recovery were good. The Dominion must get that- four million back.

Thebe was a very large attendance at the second of a series of euchre parties held on Tuesday night under the auspices of St. Mary’s Church. Sixty players engaged in the tournament, the prize winners being:— Ladies, Ist prize (silver and cut glass box) Mrs Veitogen; consolation, Miss Doris YVTiibley; gents, (cigarettes) Mr* Jack Madden: consolation, Mr F. D. W’hibley. The community sing, under the baton of Mr Johnnie Colder, was even more successful than the last. Musical items were rendered during the progress of the games, duets being given by Misses Del any and Paterson. An impromptu dance was held at the conclusion of the euchre, t lie music being supplied by Messrs B. and A. Walls and Iv. Hirini. A tasty supper was served by the ladies committee.

There passed away yesterday at the Palmerston North Hospital another of New Zealand’s pioneers in the person of Mrs R, Robinson, relict of the late Mr John Tucker Robinson, and mother of Mrs J. H. Reid and Mr P. T. Robinson, rePalmerston North. The deceased lady was born in Marlborough sev-enty-live years ago, her father, Mr M. Aldridge, having been one of the foundation settlers of the province and one of the best-known of the pioneers. The late Mrs Robinson was also widely known and esteemed in Marlborough and ’Wanganui, where she had resided. Five daughters and one son remain to mourn their loss. The late Mrs Robinson resided with her daughter, Mrs Reid, in Foxton, for some time subsequently removing to Palmerston. Mr Horace Reid, of Foxton. is a grandson of deceased.
