OPIUM CONSUMPTION.
NEW YORK, Sept. 30. The New York Times’s Washington correspondent states that Mr Stephen Porter, chairman of the House Committee of Foreign Affairs, following a conference with President Harding, at which they discussed the opium situation of the world, announced that immediately after re-eon veiling Congress, lie will introduce a resolution asking for an international conference of all nations producing opium. It is understood that an investigation conducted by a committee composed of Messrs Hughes, Mellor and Hoover found that the United States is the greatest per capita consumer of drugs in the world. As a result of this investigation President Harding decided to open the way to hold a conference of nations to discuss this question.—A. and N.Z. cable. S’
