Both gentlemen have taken a keen interest “in promoting the welfare of the port and Mr Newman stated that he had made application for a 1 grant on the supplementary estimates for improvements. The chairman of the Harbour Board, Air Linklater, is also leaving no stone unturned to effect necessary improvements, which will make for increased shipping in the near future; The Board has incurred considerable expense in improving the port “and all that is now required is increased shipping. Air Ed. Newman, M.P., has been making enquiries re suitable steamers to work the port and has communicated with the local Harbour Board on the subject and the local Chamber of Commerce. The president of the local Chamber of Commerce (Air A. N. Smith) on receipt of a letter from AH Ed. Newman re shipping, convened a special meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the subject. The purport of the letter was to the effect that he had had a proposition put before him to put a steamer on .the Foxton Hade, provided local and district interest was taken in the proposal.
