A GREAT CHANGE.
"Fifty-seven years ago one man, without money, misunderstood, „ ,'sheeredf 'at and persecuted, toiling day apd night'amongst the poor, the ~'Outcast, tjie criminal, the fallen, the rendlesfi, determined at all costs hel)s" make' the world better, agd more Godlike. That man Booth. half a century a mighty army of earnest men and women has evolved who are at the present time at work in 73 different countries and colonies, speaking 46 different languages, with 33,436 ;; '£andsg£eu giving all service absolutely free, employing 24,582 officers continuously toiling amongst cri- . ipinals, unfortunate and betrayed '"'‘girls, the'poor* the home- . the .friendless and the heathen. Its work is acknowledged and hon- /; oured bv, the’ nations’ rulers and “Governments everywhere and this — .' the world’s greatest army of social 7 service workers is putting into effect sane and practical "‘that secure permanent ard farreaching results. 77 This Army is the Salvation Army, “ one word accounts for their sue--77 cess —sincerity. The Salvation Army not only believed that there “ was hope-for-the-worst,-it went after most--disreputable in the hotel bar, in the slum, in the prison, and on the street corner. Its success has been attained in the most, .difficult, fields of human r effort, at the minimum of cost, and its work must go on. A great- deal • - of ther maintenance of the Army is due tp their great yearly effort — the Self Denial Appeal, which enT ables them to carry on its work of mercy and benevolence. This year the appeal has already begun and all generous friends are asked to contribute'liberally. The earnestness of the organisation certainly commends the appeal to every section of the public.
