BOWLING.
The official opening of the local bowling green and croquet courts will take place at 2 p.m. to-mor-row. The general public are invited to be present. Invitations have been issued to all clubs in the district to be represented at the function, and from replies received it is anticipated that a larjre number of visitors will ho present. Considerable work has recently been devoted to the preparation of the,green, and from present appearances an excellent playing surface will be the result. The application of liquid blood manure during the past month or two has done an immense amount of good to the grass, and the result has more than justified the work entailed.
The president of the Bowling Club (Mr D. Christie) will open the green for the season’s play at about. 2 p.m., and at the same time will present to last year’s winner, Mr C. A. Pearson, the handsome Wilford Cup (presented by Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P.), which was competed for as a handicap singles trophy last season. The trophies in the various croquet competitions of last year will also be presented by Mr Christie when opening the ladies’ croquet courts. The.winners of these trophies are: —Twentyminutes Tournament : “A’s," Mrs Brvant (trophy presented by Mrs K. Huntley): “B’s,” Mrs E. Huntley (trophy presented by Mrs A. N". Smith). Singles competition: ••.Vs,” Mrs C. A. Pearson (trophy presented by Mr R. Bryant): “B’s,” Mrs R. Owen (trophy presented by Mrs H. Bryant). An invitation was issued to Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., to attend the ollieial opening of the bowling green, and the Secretary has received a reply, in which Mr Wilford expresses bis appreciation, but regrets that hi- Parliamentary duties at present preclude- the possibility of his being present to-morrow, and wishing the Club a successful ,-easou. Bowlers and members of the Cro11net Club are requested to bring a basket, in order to assist in the afternoon tea arrangements. Players are requested to lie on ihe green prompt, so that the necessary arrangement of rinks can be concluded in good time.
The Shannon Club open their green on Wednesday of next week. Reports indicate that the Shannon screen is in good playing order this season, and the membership as strong as it was last season, so Shannon members anticipate a very good year at “ye olde game. A local rink journeyed to the opening of the Devin green on Saturday last, and although they were not successful in their game, report that they had a very pleasant outing. A rink skipped by Nye journeyed In Feilding on Saturday, to the opening of the green there. Circumstances necessitated the local four being separated at the commencement of “hostilities,” but later three of the local players were combined in the rink, and after a very interesting game Nye’s rink was successful by a margin of five points.
