ESTIMATES PASSED
. COMMISSIONER CONTROL. The House, devoting itself to the estimates, made good progress yesterday, only a few departments being left for consideration. The following votes were passed:—External affairs, £18,756; Pensions Department, £119,801; Internal Affairs, £268,904; Audit,. £24,793; Public Service Commissioner, £B,OOO. In criticising the Public Service Commissioner system, when the House was asked to pass the vote, Mr Wilford declared this meant over £1 per head of the staff controlled by the Commission, only 7,000 out of 51,000 public servants being under that system. He suggested that the Government should either abandon it or put all employees under Commissioner control. Mr Massey said he was willing to admit the present position was unsatisfactory, because a large number of departments were outside the Commissioner’s control. He was utterly opposed to political control of the Public Service, but the present system wanted amending and improving, and he would deal with it next session.
