BOXING IN AUSTRALIA.

NEW ZEALANDERS” SUgCESS. WINS AT OPENING SESSION. HOBART, Sept. 26. The opening session of the Australasian amateur boxing championships provided fine sport. The New Zealanders acquitted themselves creditably, winning all their lights. McDonald was too strong for Thompson, using both hands with great effect. Thompson was sent to the boards on many occasions, but showed wonderful pluck and was warmly cheered. Purdy boxed cleanly and had no difficulty in outpointing the less experienced Muir. Hansen and Williams provided the host bout of the session. There was little between them and they were warmly applauded. Mettle knocked out Brennan with art uppercut to the point. Braneourt and Muller provided an amusing bout. The former was too fall for his opponent, who had to be content with body blows. The results are as follows: Lightweight.—McDonald (New Zealand) beat S. J. Thompson (Queensland) on points. Bantam weight.—A. J. Peet (Victoria) defeated R. H. Wood (Tasmania) on points; V. Nolan (Queensland) l>eat G. P. Boyton (New South Wales) on points. Feather weight.—B. Ristuclia (Victoria) heat C. Iloptior (New South Wales) on points; Purdy (New Zealand) beat J>. Muir (Queensland) on [joints. Weller weight.—llanscn (New Zealand) beat E. T. Williams (New South Wales) on points; G. Neilson (Queensland) knocked out W. Henderson (Victoria) in the fourth round. Middle weight,—W. Smith (Queensland) outpointed W. E. Carruthers (Victoria); Mealo (Now Zealand) knocked out J. Brennan (New South Wales) in the first round. Heavy weight.—M. Killeen (Victoria) beat W. Fisher (Tasmania), the towel be ing thrown in at the end of the second round; J. Braneourt (New South Wales) outpointed G. Muller (Queensland). —Press Association.
