NOVICE TOURNAMENT. The Mauawatu Boxing Association staged a number of no vie|s ■bouts on Wednesday night, which included some local lads. In the ’light-weight competition, Upton, Moutoa, lOst. 21b., beat Doyle, Palmerston North, 9st: 91b. —The contestants did not get to close quarters in the first, but the seeo'nd was much more willing, each man in® turn scoring telling hits to the face. Upton forced the pace in the last round, and scored a decisive win. D. Bow, Moutoa, 9st. 91b., beat W. Smith, Palmerston North, 9st. (ilb. —The country man bad the advantage in reach, but Smith was the more active. Both used a straight left to some purpose, but Bow’s reach stood him in. good stead, and he fought his opponent to a standstill. F. Bow, Moutoa, 10st., beat McDonald, Levin, fist. 61b.—There was more sparring than boxing in first, and a lot of clinching in the ' second, hut the hist was more lively. Bow was the winner on points. Ihle, Palmerston North, 9st. 131 b., beat D. Bow, Moutoa, 9st. 91b. — Bow again made good use of his straight left. Ihle became more aggressive iu the middle stages, frequently connecting with the right, and in the final round he pi-oved the winner after a very willing finish. 4 Upton, Moutoa, lOst. 21b., beat Taylor, Palmerston North, lOst. 21b. —Upton brought Taylor to the lloor in a -whirlwind first round, but the latter recovered in the second, and proved the better in-fighter. Finally Upton’s left earned him to victory. Ihle,. Palmerston North, 9st. 131 b., won the final against Upton, Moutoa,!.los t. 21b. —The first round was rather tame, Upton having the better of the exchange. The man from the Swamp also scored in the second with good lefts, followed by the right. Ihle, however, scored h eav ly in the final, and won a closely contested bout.
