Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, SEPT. 14, 1922. A POLITICAL APPOINTMENT?
CR.WIIIBLEY when speaking in opposition to the appointment of Mr A\ r . Signal as the borough representative on the Harbour Board, said that that gentleman’s appointment was purely of a political nature. Prior to the election in April 1921, in calling attention to the vacancies to be filled on the Harbour Board, we published the following:— “There is one man in the community who is pre-eminently qualified to fill the vacancy, Mr \Y. Signal, and we hope he will consent to nomination." This was the general opinion then as now, but unfortunately Mr Signal was at that time out of the district. The political aspect, therefore, did not then, or now, enter into the question, at least so far as Mr Sigma 1 is concerned. Grs. Whiblev and Martin have introduced party politics into local municipal affairs, which is to be regretted. There can be no two opinions as to the wisdom of the choice made bv'the Council in appointing Mr Signal to the position.
