Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, SEPT. 12, 1922. HARBOUR BOARD APPOINTMENT.
THE Borough Council nre (o be coiamended for appointing Mr W. Signal to till the vacancy on the Harbour Board caused by the death of Mr \V. Bock. Probably there is no one in (he community who possesses a more intimate knowledge of the working of the port and the vagaries of the river and bar and whose practical experience would be of more value to the Board. Mr Signal’s long experience of coastal .shipping will be of inestimable value at the present juncture. The insinuation made by one Councillor about Mr Signal’s connection with Messrs Levin and Co., coming from the source it. did, can be treated with the contempt it deserves. Mr Signal’s advice had been sought time and angain by the late chairman of the Board on matters of vital importance to the port and had his advice been followed the Board would have been saved a very considerable sum of money. Mr Signal does not look for or take up any public work to gratify a vain ambition, neither is he after the limelight. Had Mr Sign a 1 been in Pox ton at the time of the election, lie would not only
have been nominated blit, we have no hesitation in saying, that the public would have elected him to a seat on the Board, a position for which his, qualifications and practice.! experience so pre-eminently qualifies hint to hold. His appointment by the Council will meet with general public approval, notwithstanding the jibes of a few extremists who thinks to the contrarv.
