FIRE ON A SCHOONER.

DUE TO SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. The crew of the schooner John A. Campbell have arrived at Newcastle. Captain Ferem explained that smoke was noticed from the after hatch about noon on Ist August, when the loading of copra was almost completed. The crew and a handful of Tarawa settlers were unable to cope with the flames, and the vessel was abandoned about midnight. The Resident Commissioner found that the fire was caused accidentally. Captain Ferem says that it is generally believed that the fire was due to spontaneous combustion.—Press Association.
