Downie .Stewart, Minister of 'internal Allairs, to press for consideration in the eveni of prohibition being carried. The spokesman stated that over 1000 men ami 7000 dependents would be ali'eeted. The request was not for compensation, but work or sustenance for their families.
Mr McCombs. M.P., supported the lequesl as a most reasonable one. The expected cost to the Government would he small ns the workers would readily be absorbed by llte diversion of money into new channels. The Minister said the matter was for the Government, but as the Act. stood compensation was ruled out. As it was the act of the electors that would cause the loss, perhaps the electors should provide work if prohibition is carried. Parliament would be convened, as Mr Massey had stated, and the position of the workers could then be considered. The Minister thought the trade should have made some provision The sword had been hanging over its head for a long time. Would the New Zealand Alliance meet the didiculty as a thanks offering?
