CONFLAGRATION.

Shortly before midnight ou Tuesday a fire broke out in the stables at the rear of Whyte’s Hotel. the alarm was sounded the flames had a good hold of the structure and being old, was quickly demolished. The stables were owned by' Mr F. S. Easton and occupied by Mr W. F. McDonald. Two sets of harness were destroyed and a quantity of fodder. The vehicles and other contents were housed nearby Mr Walls’ storeroom adjoining had a narrow escape and some of the contents were damaged by water. The building was not insured. Mr McDonald estimates his loss at about £BO. The cause of the outbreak is not known but is considered accidental. The insurance on the plant is £1(30 in the name of the Repatriation Department, the loss under this policy being one set of harness.
