POLITICAL.

Mr J. McCoombs, Labour M.P. will speak in the Town Hall at Foxton on Monday evening next. Mr Stuart, of Bulls, made a decided hit at the Town Hall on Monday evening when proposing a vote of thanks to the Prime Minister for his interesting address.. His genial personality and broad' Scotch accent took on with the big -audience. They grew more interested as lie related that 20 years ago lie was a flax cutter in the Moutoa swamp and related some of his early experiences. Mr Stewart urged the working men to support the present Government a,s they would find in them iheir best friends. Mr Massey in acknowledging the vote paid a tribute to Mr Stewart’s grit to make good and advised working men lo follow his example and do likewise. Mr Joseph I.inklater, the Reform riindidale for Manawatu. got a good “kick ..IV" at Monday night’s meeting. He is, however, not fond of the limelight and is somewhat of a, retiring disposition. He is a man of deeds rather than words. This pmsi not he mistaken to mean, however, that he cannot be roused, as those who have been associated with him in public life can testify. He can take the gloves off when occasion demands it. Joseph Linkla lor was horn at Stafford, Westland, his parents were among the pioneers of Westland. His mother hails from Dundee and his father from the Orkney Islands —both sterling settlers and held in high esteem. •■.Joe’’ as he is familiarly called, has never sought prominence, but his sterling I .character and honesty of purpose have attracted him i<> others. By grit, determination and hard work, he has succeeded in his own affairs, and has applied the same attributes to public institutions with which be is associated. He has been farming in this district for 20 years. For the past six years lie has been Chairman of the Kairanga County Council, Chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board, member of the Mana-watu-Oroua Hydro-Electric Board, member* of tlTe Manawatu Gorge Board of Control* and Manawatu River Board, member of the Manawatu A. and P. committee and is a director of four companies. He is a veteran of the South African War and fought under General Plumer. His loyalty to King and Constitutional Government and Empire needs no comment. So far as the Labour movement is concerned, every wage earner who has been under his control praises his fair dealing and generous treatment and in this connection lie will receive a good deal of support.
