RAILWAYS FINANCE.

POSITION MUCH IMPROVED

(Per Press Association.) The Minister of Railways made a statement in the House of Representatives to-day regarding railways fin..nee. He said that during the four-weekly period ended June 24 the deficit on working amounted to £166,668, or deducting the profit (£9010) on the Westport line (the only one showing a profit), a nett deficit of £157,658, which worked out at £2160 per day compared with £4770 daily in August of last year. Last year the expenditure exceeded the revenue in a corresponding period by over £40,000. During the period ended June last the revenue exceeded the expenditure by £168,000. The Minister stressed the fact that economy in management was being practised in an increasingly effective manner.
