ROGUE SENT TO GAOL
Auckland, August 9. At the Supreme Court Leo W. Phillips, guilty of failing to account for £2OO received on behalf of another party, was sentenced to three years’ imrd labour. Accused received money from a woman to be lent to a taxi-driver, the woman to receive a biil-of-sale on a motor car. Accused maintained the money was lent to him. The jury returned a verdict of theft. Mr Justice Herdman said accused was a thorough-paced rogue, had defrauded a friend, and had even married under false pretences. He has a record of fraud extending over thirty years.
