CHILD WELFARE.
Dr. Truby King, Director of Child Welfare and Nurse Paterson visited Foxton yesterday and delivered very interesting lectures, principally dealing with child welfare, in the Town Hall supper-room. There was a large attendance of women and the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) pre--ided and extended a welcome- to the speakers. Dr Truby King spoke interestingly of motherhood and child welfare, dealing with the feeding of the infant and advising mothers to conform to the laws of nature. He explained the causes' and effects of malnutrition.
In the course of her address, Nurse Paterson stressed the advantages of regular four hourly feedings from birth between the hours of G a.in. and 10 p.m. for all normal infants. A Plunket baby was not a baby fed on humanised milk, but one fed regularly in the natural way. Binders were ridiculed, Miss Paterson remarking that they would not prevent hernia, but might cause it. Freedom of action was necessary to strengthen the back muscles. Those who believed that by keeping them bound up they would attain this end should apply splints to child’s legs and arms. Humanised milk, as now made, could be ready within five minutes of the milk being delivered at the house. The fat used was the New Zealand emulsion which replaces the top milk. Votes of thanks were accorded the speakers on the motion of the Mayor and Mrs MeMurray, (local secretary). - * At the conclusion of the lectures, the speakers were entertained at afternoon tea at the Plunket room. Dr. Truby King paid a flne tribute to tlie local branch of the Plunket Society for their up-to-date rooms and the enthusiasm displayed in child welfare. He paid a fine tribute to Nurse Kearns who to take charge of this di-riot as from September Ist. He referred to her as one of the uio.-q efficient and best qualified nurses in the society.
