CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Council of the local Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening. Present: —Messrs A. N. Smith (president), the Mayor (Mr John C’hrystall), Follas, Rev. Walton, Admore, Whibley, Christie, Hornblow and the secretary (Mr luingilieuea). An apology for absence was received from Mr Pearson. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From Messrs C. M. Ross Co. offering rooms for meetings. Resolved that meetings be held in the Town Hall for the present. From the District Traffic Manager, informing the Chamber that Ihe Department did not provide foot-warmers in carriages on branch lines where a comparatively short journey was involved. —Mr Admore said the children and passengers felt the cold on winter mornings and this provision should be made for their comfort. —Letter received. From the N.Z. Associated Chambers of Commerce forwarding a booklet, on Taxation. —Received. An account for hire of meeting room was passed for payment. GENERAL BUSINESS. A notice of motion, moved by Mr Follas, that the night of meeting be changed to the third Thursday in each month was carried. Owing to Mr Moorhouse, vicepresident having left the district, the office became vacant, and Mr J. T. Follas was elected to the posi--1 ion. The Borough Council to be written to asking to provide a light in ibe passage-way between the ball and supper-room. TELEPHONE, PARTY LINES. The president reported that circulars had been sent to settlers in the Moutoa district urging them to connect up with the local exchange per medium of party lines and inviting them to attend a meeting of the Chamber. Full particulars as to cost, etc., had been submitted to them. He was informed that several settlers had consented to link up. The Mayor said he would call >n several of the settlers interested ind Mr Whibley said he would get into touch with others in the district.

RAILWAY TIME TABLE

Mr Homblow asked whether anj definite steps had been taken b> the Railway Department to altei the time-table to allow the evening trains to arrive at Foxton at 6.1 E o’clock instead of 7.10 p.m.

Mr Christie stated that the District Traffic Manager had recommended the alteration and that the new arrangement had been submitted to headquarters for confirmation. —Resolved to again communicate with the local stationmaster on the subject. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to write to Mr Ed. Newman, M.P., reminding him of the promise made by the Hon. Sir Francis Bell to introduce legislation giving the Foxton Harbour Board power to arrange finance to assist shipping facilities at the local port. The Mayor briefly outlined the interview of the deputation with the Minister on the subject and said it was hoped that the authority required by the Board would have been included in the washing-up bill of last session.

Mr Whibley asked that the Chamber assist to make the forthcoming meeting of ratepayers, to be addressed by the Chairman and engineer of the Horowheuua Electric Power Board re the loan proposals, a success. The Mayor said he hoped the Chairman would be in possession of facts concerning cost of power to consumers.
