Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, JULY 25, 1922. MR, NEWMAN’S RETIREMENT.
PEOPLE of all shades of political opinion throughout this electorate will regret to learn the cause which has reluctantly compelled Mr Ed. Newman, member for this constituency to retire —at least for the present—from active public life. The condition of Mr Newman’s health has been known, for some time past, to his intimate friends, yet he has continued to conscientiously discharge. his public duties without complaint and with an indomitable spirit. He is one of those publicspirited men who, if allowed, would prefer to drop in his tracks rather than give in. Rut his medical advisers have made it quite clear to him that a period of rest is imperative, hence his withdrawal as a candidate at the forthcoming election. Mr Newman has been activily connected with public affairs for the .past thirty years, serving on various local bodies prior to entering politics in 1908, when he defeated the late Mr John Stevens for this constituency. Since then Mr Newman has had an unbroken record of' service as a Parliamentarian, he having ever enjoyed the confidence and support of the majority of liis constituents. He lia~ served the constituency faithfully in the general interests. He has been a staunch and loyal supporter of the Reform Government in its general policy but has not withheld criticism. There is general regret throughout the electorate at Mr Newman’s retirement and at a suitable juncture public appreciation of' his services will no doubt be made.
