MAY WORKING

At Monday night’s Council meeting the gas works report was read as follows: — The amount of gas manufactured during the month of May was 572,300 cu.ft., which with the amount in the holder on May Ist., 7,900 ft., made a total of 580,200 cu.ft. During the month 471,000 cu.ft. was used by consumers, 27,700 ft. in street lamps, 32,000 ft at the works and there was 11,200 ft in the holder on June Ist, making a total of 541,900 ft and eaving 37,300 ft., representing 6.7 per cent, unaccounted _for. 52 tons of coal was carbonised during the month, yielding 11,036 cu.ft. to the ton. The earnings for the month totalled £3lB 3s lOd, and was made up as follows: —Gas Sales (lighting), £129 8s 4d, heat and power £142 ss, coke sales £27 4s lid, tar sales £2 13s, fittings £l3 13s 9d, labour fittings ss, miscellaneous £3 3s lOd, a total of £3lB 3s lOd. The expenditure for the month totalled £216 18s Bd, and was made up as follows Coal £134 9s, salaries, wages, etc., £66 Is JOd, services £ls 2s Id, fittings £lO 9s 9d, working expenses £1 6s, general repairs £3 0s Bd, cartage and freight 11s 3d, retorts (labour) £SO 12s Bd, ft. material £l9 ss, sundries 3s 2d, inteest on sinking fund £59 11s Bd, a total of . £360 13s Id. MANAGER’S REPORT. The manager reported that the apparatus was in good working order. Fifty-two tons of coal was carbonised, giving an average of ll,o3Ccu.ft. per- ton. A setting of two retorts had been fixed and was now in: use, which it was hoped

would obviate night work. The retort setter is getting on well with his work and hopes to complete in about five weeks time. The general work outside and consumers - requirements have been attended to as quickly as possible. Cr. Martin-thought that they were going in “big licks” for coal. He thought £2B per truck was too costly.—The report was adopted.
