TREE PLANTING.
At last night’s Council meeting the Beautifying Society asked permission to plant plane trees along both sides of Avenue Road from Main Street to the windmill corner and along both sides of Union St., from Johnstone St. crossing to Main St., and along Main St., south end. Cr. Bryant said a poor .job bad been made of the guard- along Park St, _ The Mayor said he had been approached and had told them to go ahead. ■ Cr. Coley said the planting of plane trees would be a curse as the leaves were a nuisance to householders. People had quite enough to do to clean up their own premises without cleaning up the rubbish from the streets. The society had plenty of money to spend iu carrying out other more important beautifying work. Cabbage trees, cherries, apples find "oosebonw trees were fnoetiously suggested. The Mayor’s action was endorsed, Crs. Coley and Bryant voting against. “Thought is parent of the deed.” — Carlyle.
