LABOUR CONFERENCE.

Auckland. Last Night. The New Zealand Labour Conference resolved that national officers in future should be elected by the Conference, instead of by a plebiscite of the membership. The following were appointed:—President, Mr Brindle (Wellington); vice-president, Rev. Archer (Christchurch) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr Nash (Wellington). Fourteen delegates representing .the Levin. Fox-ton and Shannon branches of the Labour Party, forming the Labour Representative Committee for the Mauawatu electorate, met at l-Vxton on Thursday night. ■ Various matters relating to the coming election campaign were fully discussed, and certain decisions taken in regard thereto. Replies were received from most of the members of the Parliamentary Labour Party, expressing their willingness to address meetings in the electorate. N The following resolution was passed in regard to the Mangahao disaster: “That this committee learns with profound regret of the death through gas poisoning of seven of our fellow-workers at Mangahao, and offers the bereaved relatives our sincere sympathy. We feel assured that, if proper precautions had been taken, and the necessary appliances had been on the spot, the tragedy would not have taken place. V e call upon the Government to so act that there can he no possibility of such an occurrence in the future.”

The rumoured understanding between the Labour Party and the Liberals was discussed, the general feeling being strongly opposed to any alliance whatever. It was decided to forward the following telegram to the New Zealand 'Labour Party’s conference now sitting at Auckland: “That the Manawatu Labour Representative Committee protests against any alliance or understanding with the alleged Liberal Party.”-—Chronicle.
