BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
At a meeting of the above held on Monday accounts amounting to £37 13s 9d were passed for payment. It was reported that the roadway into Easton Park had been formed, the Council -applying the material. The shrubs had been dug round and preparation made for the boxthorn hedge. It was decided to erect two break-winds across the front part of the Park to protect the shrubs. It was decided to ask the Council’s permission to plant plane trees along part of Avenue Road, Main Street, Union and Park Streets. The shrubs that have died out in Easton Park and the old cemetery are to he replaced. Plans and specifications for the concrete steps and paths in the old cemetery are to he prepared and tenders called for the work. Mrs Moore was appointed secretary and Mr Robertson treasurer. The time has arrived for the local Beautifying Society to get- a move on with planting and beautifying our waste spaces before the season is too far advanced. The public provided a good round sum of mone\ for this purpose and unless a little more enthusiasm is shown in the society’s activities, the administration of the funds will have to be considered by the public. Some one with initiative is required to formulate a well-defined policy which should he submitted to the committee and carr'ed out in a business-like way instead of the present methods. There are one or two good practical men on the committee who -hould evolve and insist on a comprehon-ive scheme —the sooner the better.
