SCHOOL LOVE DRAMA.
GIRL SHOOTS HER BOY LOVER. JEALOUS OF RIVAL. A school love affair turned to grim tragedy at Mountain View, U.S.A., recently when Irene Grandstedt. 14
years old, shot her .sweetheart, Harold Galloway, 17 years old. Galloway was taken to the lied Cross Hospital at San Mateo, where he was reported to be hovering between life and death. The bullet fired by the girl took off the tip of one finger and perforated the intestines in twelve places. The girl, when questioned by Sheriff George Lyle, of San Jose, is reported to have confessed to the shooting.' Jealousy is said to have been the cause of the tragic attack. The two met the previous evening at a church sociable, and were surrounded by a number of their companions outside the church when the girl drew the pistol and fired one shot, which struck Galloway in the abdomen. After the shooting she returned to her home and went "to bed without telling wnat had happened to either her mother or father. An effort to hush up the whole matter, shielding the girl, was attempted by the companions who had been witnesses to the shooting. After firing the shot the girl dropped the pistol, some witnesses say, and a. boy companion picked it up and concealed it. CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE.
It was then agreed among the companions that the affair should be disguised as an accident. The story which they agreed to tell and stick to was that Galloway had been hit by a bullet fired by an unknown person concealed in the darkess. The story soon broke down when the serious nature of the boy’s wound became known. He was given first aid and rushed o the hospital. The doctor reported 'that there was very little hope for the boy. The boy and girl had been going together, both being students at the local high school. Another girl is said to have come between the two. On the night of the tragedy, while Galloway way'at the Catholic church,, the girDeame to the door of the church ancfsent in a message. Galloway came out, and a quarrel is said to have followed.
Mr Galloway, father of the boy, is an official of the Southern Pacific Company employed in San Francisco. \
