METHODIST CHURCH
VISITING MINISTERS WELCOMED. The Methodist School Hall last evening was crowded, when a welcome social was tendered to the ministers of Hawke’s Bay-Manawa-tu District. The Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) oeeuppied the chair. On the platform with him were the Rev. T. R. Richards (District chairman) and Rev. A. Ashcroft (secretary of N.Z. Conference). The chairman in a happy speech welcomed the visitors to the town. Rev. L; Mmifie-nlso extended a hearty welcome on behalf of the Foxton Church people. The Revs. T, R. Richards and Ashcroft replyed on behalf of the visitors. The following items were rendered: — Piano solo, Miss Evans, songs by Mrs Downs, Rev. A. Mcßean and Messrs'Downs, H. Andrew, Hunter; recitations . and monologues by Revs. G. S. Cooke and L. Minifie. A party from Levin assisted with some excellent musical numbers. A most tasty supper was provided by the ladies. A very enjoyable evenng was brought to a close with the singing of the Doxology.
CENTENARY COMMEMORATION.
A meeting of very special moment will be held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday evening. It will he of a Ceiitcnary Commemoration character. It was in 1822 that he Rev. Samuel Leigh, as the pioneer Missionary of the Methodist Church, introduced Christianity into New Zealand. The Rev. Samuel Marsden came in 1814 as the first agent of the Anglican Church in these land's. It was 100 years, on the 21st of January last, since Mr Marsden’s advent into New Zealand. The Methodist Church is this year holding its Centenary Commemoration Service which have been marked by great enthusiasm and largely attended.
On Wednesday evening the meeting will be addressed by the Rev. Dr. Laws, President of the Centenary Conference of New Zealand, and by the Rev. A. C. Lawr}', the organising secretary for the Dominion. All the ministers of the Hawke’s District will be present and all citizens are cordially invited to attend. The meeting will commence at half-past seven. During the evening anthems will bo contributed by a trained choir of some 25 voices, under the eonduetorshp of Mr Harold Osborne.
