A HINDOO LEADER
A most interesting and illuminating article appears in Stead’s current issue, undere the heading of “Men of Mark.” This is a sketch of Serinivassa Sastri, the representative of India at the Washington Conference. This man is hailed as one of the most brilliant Indians in political life. Although a Government official, his utterances reveal a strength of character and independence of thought which lift him far above the atmosphere of officialdom. He belongs to the Brahmin cast, and had a brilliant scholastic career. He was the first to break the tradition whereby every male of his family had become a priest. Mr Sastri has been a selfsacrificing patriot, and is confident that, his country will receive Dominion status within a decade. He declares that the day lias past when Britons could talk of Indians as a subject people. He believes such a concession would be perfectly safe, and that the quicker it is given the better. Mr Sastri, who is 53 years old has arrived in Australia.
