HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the memof the above society was held in Ross’ buildings last night. The president (Mr W. Renton) presided over a good altendance. The annual report and balance-sheet was read and adopted. The latter disclosed receipts for the year £lO6 14s lid and expenditure £SS 14s Lid, leaving a credit balance of £2l. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr A. S. Easton (re-elected); president. Rev. Walton (subject to his consent); vice-presidents, Messrs J. Cbrysta.il (Mayor), Ed. Newman, M.P., Drs. Wyllie and Rowley, B. J. Gower, J. K. Hornblow, F., C., and J. Robinson, W. Signal, 0. H. Symons, M. H. Walker, H. C. Patterson. W. Ross, A. Speirs and J. Delaney; committee, Messrs W. Xve, W. E. Bullard, Jno. Ross, M. Perreau, D. Christie, Poole, Scollav, J. T. Follas, C. Pearson, Owen, Mesdames Freeman, Wyllie, Given, McMnrray, Procter, Moore, Head, Pearson, Misses Speirs, and Jessie Ross; secretary, Mr H. Frankland; treasurer, Mr T. Henderson; auditor, Mr F. D. Whibley. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr and Mrs Galland, who have left the district, expressing appreciation of their services in connection with the society for many years. It was also resolved to write a letter- of sympathy to Mrs A. S. Easton in her illness. A r otes of thanks were accorded to the outgoing officers.

When the business was concluded the president said he had a pleasing duty to perform. He asked the retiring secretary, Rev. Mr Halliday, to areepl a wallet and cheque from the society in recognition of his services. He .said Mr Halliday had taken the position of secretary when no one could bo found to fill the position and had carried out the duties to the satisfaction of all. The president’s remarks were endorsed by other members and the Rev. Halliday suitably acknowledged same.
