ANXIOUS TO WORK AT 103.

CENTENARIAN STILL HALE.

: Silvery-haired old William Gallop, mow resident at the Park Royal Institution, London, seeks work at 103 years of age. When a Dttily Telegraph representative called on him, the old man was in bed, thoi’oughly enjoying his newspapers >nd books.

He has written to the Willesden Guardians asking their permission to leave the home to “look for a job.” Although the “spirit is willing,” there is not much hope that the Guardians will let, him,go, because he has been under care in the wards for some months now, and does not get far from his bedroom. But in many ways “young Gallop” is a remarkable man, for he does not need glasses, and his writing is fairly firm and quite readable.

Believed/fo have been born in Bristol, Gallop has travelled in many parts of the world, and at one time is said to have been an attendant at a hospital at Bath. He is of a religious turn of mind, and is fond of reading religious books, especially the Bible. He is “valeted” regularly by an old friend, who visits the institution specially to look after the old man’s personal wants. Mr Gallop is oji the side of those who believe' thsrf temperate habits tend to long life, fie has . never smoked or taken intoxicating liquors. When he was 97 he made a similar application to go and seek for work, but the guardians would not let him. Since then he has more than once expressed the opinion that he could do a bit of work, and is quite willing. Lately he has not been so strong physically, and is helped to his bed, but has not lost his mental faculties, and has begun to write his life .story. In a good round hand he has already started to fill up a copybook o£ / manuscript.
