A collec-; tion will be .‘taken up in aid of (the Manawatu campaign fund. ! yi. ; • / We are informed that a candidate to represent the N.Z. Labour •. t party in this constituency will, be finally settle’d in°a few weeks. The, candidates mentioned are Mr F. D.J Whibley, who has been elected pre-' ', sident of the Foxton branch of N.Z. Labour Party, and Mr Moses, Ayrton* National" Secretary of the - t ‘ N.Z..-JLabour Party. Several meet- ‘ ings have been held at which the. merits of the candidates have been discussed. So far as the candidates' are concerned, Mr Ayrton ois recognised as one of the ablest '■ men in the ranks of Labour in the. Dominion and his candidature would r *v' be looked upon with concern by op- ‘ ponents in this electorate. In fact^
we question whether a stronger man
could be found in the 1 Labour ranks. ” v ln the" contest with Mr J. A. Nlaslr for the Palmerston North seat at the last general election he polled 3,488 votes against Mr Nash’s 4,407. For a\comparative stranger to run such a popular candidate so closely gives indication of his qualifications. .The choice of a candidate, however, rests with the Labour branches throughout the Constituency. I • Mr Whibley, so far, is an (Unknown quantity in Labour circles, and his election as president of the local branch is his first official entry into the realms of party politics. ;
