CARPENTIER FLOORS LEWIS.
A ONE-ROUND “FIGHT.”
London, -May. 12. There were 17,000 at the boxing match between Carpentier and “Bad” Lewis, including the Duke of York and Prince Henry. The final •blow (in the firlfc -round), was a short, sharp hook, planted artistically. Carpentier held witfi his left and delivered the blow with bis \ right. The winning hit was the natural outcome of a contest which was a positive travesty on boxing, as known in England. At the beginning Lewis held and hit Carpentier, not attempting to get .'away. The referee shouted to the two men to clear and fight legally, but Lewis continued holding with one hand and punching with the other. When Carpentier tried to get clear and start a-fresh, Lewis continued to hold and hit, but when Carpentier realised lie was being punished under a new sort of rule, unknown in British boxing, lie appeared to decide to disregard the rules, like Lewis.
Carpentier pushed his face close to Lewis’s chest, and twice raised his head beneath Lewis’s chin. This annoyed Lewis, who retreated, but. a few seconds later he renewed his' old tactics of in-fighting and ing. Carpentier, again keeping \ close, then apparently decided to do what Lewis did. Half-a-dozen times lie hit on the breakaway, and when Lewis tried to get away he prevented him by [Milling Lewis with his left and then delivered the knockout.
After the count was over Carpentier tried to shake Lewis’ hand, but Lewis snatched his hand away and tried weakly to punch the Frenchman.
Lewis’ supporters made a disgraceful and unsporting demonstration against Carpentier and the referee after the fight, which was generally denounced. Everybody, including Wilde, Dempsey and Wilson, except Lewis and his hacker, agrees that the decision was a fair one.
