THE HEMP INDUSTRY

The returns for the grading of hemp, tow and stripper-slips has been issued by the Department of Agriculture for the month of April as follows: — Hemp. —The total number of bales graded was 5,334 as compared with 4,740 for the corresponding period of last year, an increase of 594 bales. For the twelve months ending April 30th, 1922, the number of bales graded was 58,594 as compared with 79,905 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 21,371 bales. •

Tow. —During the month 1,148 bales of tow were graded as compared with 1,270 for the same month last year, a decrease of 128 bales. For the twelve months ended 30th April, 1922, the number of bales graded was 12,857 as compared with 17,475 for the previous twelve months, a .decrease of 4,018 bales. Stripper Slips.—During the month there were no stripper-slips graded as compared with 175 bales for the corresponding month of last year. For the .twelve months ended 30th April, 1922, the number of bales graded was, 415 as compared with 2,207 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,792 /bales. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded at each port:—

Four bales at Wellington were graded fine; one bale at Auckland, 44 at Foxton and 20 at Wellington were rejected. The following shows the number in each grade, the number for (he corresponding period of lust year being given in parenthesis:—Good Fair 940 (924), High Fair 2.985 (2,497), Fair 1,117 (1,117), Common 223 (45), Rejected 65 (75), Condemned nil (8), a total of 5,334 bales, an increase of 594 bales. The number of bales graded at ea<)h port was as follows: —Auckland 1,335, Foxton 1,327, Wellington 1,883, Blenhiem 174, Pieton 66, Bluff 182, Dunedin 14i, Wairoa 226. The following are tjie detailed particulars of the tow graded:—

Wairoa 52 Twenty-two bales at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding ( period of last year being given in parenthesis: —First grade 387 (292), second grade 686 (767), third grade 53 (193), condemned 22 (24), a total of 1,148 bales, a decrease of 128 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 262, Foxton 279, Wellington 392, Blenliieni 54, Picton 34, Bluff 37, Dunedin 38, Wairoa 52.
