At Inst night V Council meeting nccounts amounting to £1,875 10s 7d were passed for payment.
A bumper house is anticipated for the Benefit Concert to be given in the Royal Theatre this evening. A Cross of Sacrifice lms already been erected in 142 British military cemeteries over in France and Flanders.
Mr Charles Dransfield, an old seaside resident, left Foxton to-day for Paraparaumu, where he will take up his' residence with Mr George Langley. The Installation Ceremony\ in connection with the local Masonic Lodge lakes place to-morrow afternoon. In the evening visiting brethren and ladies will be entertained at a dance.
Saturday was the twelfth anniversary of the .accession of George V., and in honour of the day the Hag was flying at the Post Office. The school essays in the Dominion Prize Essay Competition on the subject of “Alcohol and the Human Body and Mind,” will close on May 20th. Cash prizes aggregating £431 are offered. Mr W. .Johnstone, representative for the famous Rev . Papakura classical vaudeville company, under the direction of Mr Louis Alsace, is in town making arrangements for the big theatrical event to be shown at the Town Hall on Friday evening, 12th May.
Those present at last night’s Council meeting were: —His Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall Esq.), and Councillors Whiblev, Bryant, Smith, Hand, Ross, Marlin, Thompson, Walker and Coley. Mr King, Borough Engineer, was-also in attendance.
A childish joke, which might have led to serious results, was perpetrated on a scholar in the infant division at the local Slate School last week-hv one or two of his playmates. A piece of slate pencil about an inch in length was put in his ear where it remained for a time without the parents knowledge. It was subsequently extracted by a medical man. Fortunately the drum of the car was not nenetrated. *
Mrs Chapman Taylor who is on a visit to Foxtoh has consented to give an address to the members of the Guild of St. Monica in All Saints Schoolroom on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m. She has chosen or her subject the title of “Woman’s Work.” Mrs Chapman Taylor who has delivered numerous interesting lectures in England and in this country is a speaker of some replite and her address on Thursday should be well worth listening to. There is no charge for admission and a cordial invitation to be present is extended to all girls and women of Foxlon.
Extra seats had to be brought into the Supper-room of the Town •ITall on Sunday night last to accommodate those who attended to listen to Mr Fordo D. B. Carlisle's address on Christ’s Second Coming. The lecturer dealt, with his subject in a clear and convincing way and showed that the Scriptures left no doubt as to the certainty of this event aiid that a denial of’ it involved a complete break with the words of Christ and His 'Apostles. The interest of the audience was main-, tained throughout and the decision of Mr Carlisle to give another address next Sunday will meet with general approval.
A wicker pram is advertised for sale; good as new.
Board and residence in private family is wanted by young man engaged in clerical work.
