ANGLICANS AND PROHIBITION.
Speaking in reply to the Alliance deputation at the Anglican General Synod at, Auckland this week, the ■Primate said that as far as he knew the'General Synod has never passed 'liny'direct resolution on the subject of Prohibition. Diocesan synods had expressed objection more than once to making any decision on the question, which they regarded as political. “I can assure you,” he said, “that 30 years ago there were few clergy and fewer laitv who could have listened so patiently to what you; have said, but a very vast majority at this moment, if not in favour of Prohibition, are in favour of. a great change.” He was aware that the Prohibition law could and would be defeated in certain quarters, but the important thing to note, was that the number of sober and decent-living men would be vastly increased. Personally he was in favour of Prohibition in New Zealand, where the geographical conditions were more favourable than in some other countries.
