MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Tuesday, when there were present: Sir James Wilson (in the chair), Crs. H. H. Hunt,' d. Boyce, W- E. Barber, W. S. Penny, H. J. Fagan and M. Hammond. The Health Department wrote urging the Council to continue the campaign against rats. —Department’s wishes to be followed.

The Railway Department requested that the brick wall erected at Oman Downs for a siding shed be pulled down, as it was 2ft. 3in. inside the railway standard clearance. —Referred to the engineer. The Pahiatua . County Council wrote asking support of a resolution that all local bodies throughout the Dominion be/asked to-approach the Government, with a, request that it apportion a part of the loan being raised on the London market for payment of local bodies’ antecedent liabilities.—Endox-sed.

The Foxton Borough Council wrote to the effect that it. was not prepared to assist in maintaining the Beach road at the Heads.—The council favoured asking for a commission to finally settle the question of contributions.

The Horowhenua County Council informed the* Council that'there did not appeal’ to be any special danger threatening the Foxton-Shannon bridge, nndi the proposed conference in connection with this matter was unnecessary. —Received.

The chairman said that the only tiling that would bring the Horowhenna Council to a sense of danger would not he public pressure, but water pressure.

The Railway Department wrote, agreeing to the hire of four wagons to nuginerit the council’s rolling stock for the supplying of metal to Rangiotu-Foxton road, at a charge, of ,€1 per day for the four wagons. —The council was of the opinion that the chai’go was too high. The chairman said the council might consider the making of its own wagons. CLOSING THE ROADS. The engineer having asked in his report that the roads throughout the' county he closed to heavy traffic from May till September, both .inclusive, the council decided that this be done and that inspectors be appointed to deal with the traffic. Cr. Penny said, with reference to the closing of the roads, that if the heavy traffic was not /-stopped the' council would have 7 to raise the rates.

The chairman remarked that the rnfepnyers were already complain-, ing of the heavy rates. AWAHOU RIDING.

The engineer reported upon the Awnhon Riding,as follows: Mr K.' Easton is making firstclass progress with his contract for constructing a stop-hank near Shannon bridge, and also for supplying and delivering metal on Fox-ton-Shannon road. I also inspected the block or dam complained of by Mr Chrystall. On my inspection T found the water was about 12 inches lower on the top side of the dam, as the drain on the lower side was completely choked with groAvth. Tn my opinion it will not benefit Mr Chrystall very much if the dam is removed, but considering the drain ha’s been constructed for at least 3ft years, the dam should he removed. T would suggest that the roads in the Awnhou, Knwa Kawa and Carnarvon Ridings be closed against heavy traffic from the present date to September 30 next. TRAMWAYS REPORT. The tramway manager reported that a debit of £l3l Os lid showed on the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were:—Merchandise 83 tons, minerals 104 tons, cheese and butter 112£ tons, metal 270 cubic yards, timber 10,400 feet. Far, es amounted to 13s lid. ’
