PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

REV. THOS. HALLIDAY TEND ERR RESIGNATION.

A congregational meeting of the Foxton charge of the above Church was held yesterday afternoon to consider the resignation of the minister, Rev. Thos. Halliday. There was a good and representative attendance. Mr Hornhlow was appointed chairman. In opening the meeting, the chairman said the minister’s resignation would come as a surprise to members and adherents. Not being an official lie could give no reason for the step. Personally lie sincerely regretted whatever causes had prompted the resignation and he hoped that as the result of thg meeting good and sufficient reasons would he forthcoming to caitse the minister to reconsider his decision. Mr Halliday had done, and was doing, good work throughout the charge and his departure would he looked upon as a serious loss.

Mr Alex Speirs, session clerk, read the minister’s resignation to the congregation which expressed regret at parting with them and expressing thanks for loyal support during his ministry. ‘Mr Speirs endorsed the chairman’s remarks and hoped that Mr Halliday would continue for at least another year. Mr Farmer (Glen Oroua) said the resignation came as a shuck to the district he represented. He eulogised the work of. Mr Hallidav.

/ .Messrs Wilton and Gimlet (Rangiotu), Stevenson, Jno. Ross and Hendersory spoke in similar strain. Resolutions were then carried unanimously that Presbytery urge Mr Halliday lo reconsider his resignation and the views of the congregation lie conveyed in person to the meeting of Presbytery to be held at Mart on to-day by Messrs Speirs, Farmer and Wilton. Copies of the resolution to lie forwarded to Mr Halliday, who was not present at the meeting. Marlon, This Afternoon. The Wanganui Presbytery lias accepted the resignation of the Rev. Thus. Halliday, of the* Foxton charge, with deep regret.
