SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

FOXTON ELECTION. , .

The large class-room at the local school was quite inadequate to accommodate the attendance of householders at last night’s meeting to elect a committee, for the ensuing year. It was not anticipated that there would he a crowd as there was no important issue at stake. Only 100 voting papers were prepared and these were insufficient to meet the demand. The local Labour Party goLbusy and were in attendance in good force, and selected a “ticket” which was not divulged to outsiders. There was a good deal of plumping indulged in, hut the result of the election was a pretty clear indication of popular selection. Seven of the eight excommitteemen standing were reelected. Messrs Cowley and Rangiheuea being the new-comers. The Mayor (Mr John Chrystall) presided and expressed pleasure at seeing such a good attendance. The report and balance-sheet for the past year was read by Mr Hornblow aujjt stated that sixteen meetings had been held during the year and business had been conducted in a spirit of harmony and co-operat-ion. Reference was made to early completion of water and drainage as a result of the borough scheme and other improved environments. The girls’ playground had been levelled at a cost of £26 10s Od, A (lag-staff had been presented by 'Mr Geo. Coley. The work of the caretaker, Mr Thos. Henderson, was favourably commented upon. Overtures had been made for the acquisition of a piece of land for swimming baths, but owing to the said land being wrongly conveyed to the Borough Council further steps could not be made until the mistake was rectified. It was hoped that a swimming hath.would soon be an accomplished fact. References to changes in the staff’ were made and des- * pite this the work of the school had been well maintained. The Gover-nor-General’s visit was touched upon, which afforded the children a tilting opportunity to manifest their loyalty. £2O had been expended on prizes for the breaking-up ceremony. The proposed side-school at the Beach was touched on and the committee’s recommendation that the children he conveyed to the school in preference. The Minister’s efforts to provide school books and stationery at cost price received the commendation of the Committee. The abandonment of the school picnic was explained, for which a sura of £3O had been donated and on deposit for next year. Appreciative ,reference was made to all who in any way had contributed to the school’s welfare.

The balance-sheet showed r<} ceipt.s at £451 12s Od and expenditure £425 Os sd, leaving a credit balance of £25 11s 6d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. of the new committee was then proceeded with and resulted as follows: — HORNBLOW 74 COWLEY 73 PEARSON 71 PERREAU 68 WHIBLEY 65 ! JNO. ROSS 64 1 GEO. COLEY 63 A. STEVENSON 61 R. RANGIHEUEA 61

The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs Rimmer 48, P. Robinson 38. Parkin 37, Alsop 32, Admore 23, Mr Knight 11. There ( was one informal vote. Messrs L. R. Freeman and D. Christie officiated as scrutineers. All the successful candidates .briefly returned thanks. During the counting of the votes the headmaster’s report was reS*L/ and adopted. ' Resolutions were passed endorsing the Educational Institute’s resolution re objection to economy in Educational "grant; favouring aboli- ~ tion of Education Boards and enlarging of committees portions of resolution forwarded by Campbell St. Committee. The various reports were spoken to and good feeling prevailed.

At the close of the householders neeting the new committee met and •c-eleeted Mr Hornhlow chairman ind Mr Rangiheuea secretary.
