Tn 1898 war broke out between the United States and Spain, which cut off the supply of Manila fibre from the Philippine Islands. This gave the flax industry in New Zealand a Chance to get a sound footing, the export figures showing the output since the Spanish-American war has been fairly steady. The drop in the amount exported in 1921 is due to the high cost of production and the yellow leaf disease reducing the supply of raw material by destroying the flax-crop in many places.
