ANZAC DAY.
THE SALE OF POPPIES. A meeting convened by the Mayor was held in the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon to discuss matters in connection with fittingly celebrating Anzac Day, and to discuss a proposal by the Returned Soldiers’ Association re sale of poppies. The Mayor (Mr Chrystall) presided over a representative attendance.
Mr Rutherford, secretary of the Palmerston R.S.A., outlined the proposal re sale of poppies. The wearing of the poppies had a three-fold object, viz., to commemorate Anzac Day. to assist the children in the devastated area of France, who made the poppies, and to assist unemployed returned soldiers with a proportion of the proceeds. Ti was resolved that all present he a committee to undertake the sale of the poppies, and that Mr llornblow distribute-same. It was decided to enlist the co-operation of the Girls' Patriotic Guild and Ladies’ Guild in this connection.
In reference to celebrating Anzac Day, the Mayor said that the Returned Soldiers desired to participate in the ceremony, and it was decided to hold a meeting of all concerned on Thursday evening, to draw it)) a programme.
