THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
MARCH GRADING. RETURNS. The returns for the grading of hemp, tow and stripper-slips was issued by the Department of Agriculture for the month of March as follows: — Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 7,480, as compared with ,, 7,537 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 57 bales. For the twelve months ending sjlst March, 1922, the number of bales-graded was 58,000, as compared with 82,836 for the previous twelve -months, a decrease of 24,836 bales.'i ; \ Tow. —During the, month, 1,844 bales of tow were, graded, as compared with 1,320 for the same month last year, an increase of 524 bales. For the twelve months .ended 31st March, 1922, ILp number of bales graded was 12.985, as compared with 17,619 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 4,634 bales: Stripper Slips.—Twenty-four bales, as compared with 485 for the corresponding month last. year. For the ttvelve months ended 31st March, 1922, the number of bales graded was. 590, as compared with 2,032 for the previous twelve months, a decrease of 1,442 bales. . The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded at each port
Ten bales at Picton were graded fine; 14 bales at Auckland, five bales at Foxton, and 67 bales at Wellington were rejected. Five bales at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number
of bales in each grade, the number { for the corresponding period of last ; year being given in parentheses: — ; Good fair 1,837 (1,877), high fair 3,990 (4,579), fair 1.367 (1,086), common 176 (46),.rejected 86 (84), condemned 5 (nil), a total of 7,480 bales, a decrease of 57 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows Auckland 1,515, Foxton 1,529, Welling- . ton 2,912, Blenheim 208, Picton 111, Lyttelton 50,-Bluff 427, Dunedin 500, Wairoa 228. The following are the detailed particulars of the tow graded: ‘ G.lPbrts: *' - -'* Ist. 2nd. 3rd.
Two bales at Auckland and five bales at Foxton were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: — First grade 847 (547), second grade 909 (737), third grade 81 (36), condemned 7 (nil), a total of 1,844 bales an increase: of 524 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 248, Foxton 475, Wellington 657, Blenheim 80, Picton 47, Lyttelton 110, Bluff 77, Dunedin 102, Wairoa 48.. . Stripper Slips.—Three bales at Wellington, and,2l bales at Foxton were graced second grade.
