“POPPY DAY.”
The Returned Soldiers’ Association of New Zealand has projected a plan for assisting those returned soldiers who, unhappily,, are suffering hardship .^through lack of employment.’ It proposes the sale of poppies on the day before Anzac Day. The French" Children’s League replicas of the Flanders poppy, to be sold before Anzac Day,, and also 3,652 large silk poppies for wreaths and crosses. The scheme placed before the R.S.A. executive provides that the poppies shall be distributed to the districts in proportion to population. The district secretaries will allocate" the poppies to the various towns.'"'The small poppies will he sold at Is each. The gross proceeds, if all the poppies are sold, will be "over £20,000. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these pretty artificial flowers will go for the b'etiOfit'of the children in the devastated areas of France, and the balance will be used to give relief to unemployed ' ex-soldiers and their families. The details will be discussed'at the meeting convened by the Mayors for ■-< Monday next, at 3 p.m. "
