A SHOCKING TRAGEDY.
COUNTY CLERK SHOOTS ■ . HIMSELP. Christchurch, Last Night. A sudden and violent fit of temper engendered by some days’ hard drinking, caused the Cheviot County Clerk, Wilfred Maxwell Cottrell, a married man aged 30. years, to shoot himself in the presence of his wife this morning. Cottrell, who was a returned soldier, with the. rank of a. . captain; was a heavy drinker. He had been drinking hard for some days, and about 8 o’clock this morning he attempted to get more liquor. His wife refused to give him anything more to drink, and he said, “If you don’t, I’ll shoot myself!” She still refused, and he seized a loaded rifle nearby, leaned down over the * . barrel and pulled the trigger, shooting himself through the heart. •
