CRIMINAL STATISTICS.

Returns are published in the Gazette of the criminal cases dealt with in the Magistrate’s Courts during 1921. The total eases dealt with were: —Male, 43,335; female, 2,462. Of these numbers, 968 males and 21 females were committed for sentence, 550 . males’land 37 females were committed for trial, and. 35,134 males and 1990 females were summarily convicted. The remaining cases were dismissed or discharged. The summary .convictions are analysed as follows: —Assaults and personal offences, 728 males, 36 females;|burglary, housebreaking and other theft from, the person, 45 males, 3 females; cattle and sheep stealing, theft, and other offences against property only, 3,159 males, 293 females: forgery and Offences against the currency, 2 males; drunk, including habitual drunkards, 8,341 males, 463 females; prohibition orders, 1,717 males, 122 femal-' (is; other offences against good order, 8,128 males, 436 females; selling liquor without a license, 64 males, 4 females; other breaches of revenue Acts, 215 males, 28 females; offences relating to carrying out law’s and against public welfare, 12,725 males, 605 females.
