Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 1922. TELEPHONE CHARGES.

THE Prime 'Minister states that so far as lie is aware, no proposal has been made for an inerease in the telephone charges in New Zealand. This statement will allay the fears of subscribers, but although the' Prime Minister may not have heard officially of Ihe proposed inerease, il cannot be denied that such inerease has been seriously considered by the Department. If any attempt is ■made to further burden commercial, professional and private subscribers with an increase, it will call forth such a storm of opposition as will effectually cause Cabinet to veto such recommendation. There arc other means of economising in the Postal Department, which must be effected before attempting to increase telephone charges.
