The Chairman stated that while this Chamber did not object to necessary Improvements to relieve . - congestion at the Palmerston railway station, it protested against the huge expenditure' public money on the deviation, which could-have been obviated by linking up the Main Trunk line between, Marton and Levin, a work of national importance, - and at comparatively no more cost than the Palmerston undertaking. COST OF RAILWAY COMMISSION. ’ A statement disclosing costs re Levin-Marton railway Commission, assessing the Chamber’s proportion j at £lO, was received from Mr A. K. I Drew, secretary.—lt,was stated that while, the Chamber did not desire to repudiate same, further information was required upon whose authority the assessment was made, and to , ask for copies of plan of the proposed’.deyiation. There were , critics who - sought to discourage members,, but as a rule such individuals were de- . void of public spirit. The influence of the Chamber had been manifested for the publi<Tgood in many directions. .They had been a happy family, ; and although there had been’dift'er- '! • ences of opinion, each had been actuated by the highest motives. There work, ahead for'* the Chamber; and he sincerely hoped that their activities would result in the same-measure of success in tlie coming year. He paid a tribute to the excellent services of the Secretary, and the hearty co-operation V of the Council. . ■ ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following Council was eleetj ed:—President, Mr A. N. Smith; vice-president, Mr Moorhouse; Messrs C. Pearson,. Hornblow, F. D.
