ANNUAL MEETING,
*0- The annual meeting of members • r r:;s.,'V of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in the Town Hall ' v Supper-room last night. There was - a*'good attendance. The president (Mi 1 Hornblow) occupied the chair. " CORRESPONDENCE I ,>, was read and dealt with as follows: : , From Levin Chamber, re Levinf Greatford link of the Main Trunk line, and' urging continued agitation '•/in this connection, also' calling attention to Mr W. H. Field’s speech : ' in the House on this subject.—Re- ' solved to inform the Levin Chamber - of this Chamber’s hearty co-opera-tion. The Chairman stated that while this Chamber did not object to necessary Improvements to relieve . - congestion at the Palmerston railway station, it protested against the huge expenditure' public money on the deviation, which could-have been obviated by linking up the Main Trunk line between, Marton and Levin, a work of national importance, - and at comparatively no more cost than the Palmerston undertaking. '*t ; \ Jlae Palmerston Chamber, in reply - t> an invitation to fix a" date for conference with local and Levin Chambers and Harbour Board re matters affec'fjng the welfare of the .-local port, stated that while sym--1 /pathetic, more information was sought.—Decided to hold tlie matter over in "the meantime. BEACH ROAD. ' V From the Manawatu County Council re maintenance of Beach Rclad, and showing cost of- same, and that v Cr. W. E. Barber would confer with . yihe Chamber on the subject. —After some discussion it was resolved to >invite Cr. Barber to the next meeting, when file subject will be fully discussed.
COST OF RAILWAY COMMISSION. ’ A statement disclosing costs re Levin-Marton railway Commission, assessing the Chamber’s proportion j at £lO, was received from Mr A. K. I Drew, secretary.—lt,was stated that while, the Chamber did not desire to repudiate same, further information was required upon whose authority the assessment was made, and to , ask for copies of plan of the proposed’.deyiation. '• -hi 4; ' REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET/ The annual report and balancer sheet (as previously published) was read and adopted.,*,- Speaking to the motion, thieChairman briefly reviewed the years’ work, and the enthusiasm'and'interest evinced (by memfbers,j u _F a oxton was .to be congratulated upon its Chamber an'd its aeti-. There were , critics who - sought to discourage members,, but as a rule such individuals were de- . void of public spirit. The influence of the Chamber had been manifested for the publi<Tgood in many directions. .They had been a happy family, ; and although there had been’dift'er- '! • ences of opinion, each had been actuated by the highest motives. There work, ahead for'* the Chamber; and he sincerely hoped that their activities would result in the same-measure of success in tlie coming year. He paid a tribute to the excellent services of the Secretary, and the hearty co-operation V of the Council. . ■ ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following Council was eleetj ed:—President, Mr A. N. Smith; vice-president, Mr Moorhouse; Messrs C. Pearson,. Hornblow, F. D. Wbibley, Ross, Admore, Jack, ’Perreau, Christie, Follas and Walton (the Mayor and Member for the district ex-officio) Mr Roore Rangihcuea (re-elected); treasurer, Air Moorhouse (re-elected); auditor, Mr W. Bock (re-elected) ; bon. solicitor, Mr R.
